 OVERALL

After numerous sets of twisted stock plastic shafts, we decided to take the plunge and invest in some CVD’s. Of course we first turned to MIP, the best know manufacturer of CVD’s in the RC world. After pricing them out, we came up with just shy of $100 in MIP shafts (front, rear and center). Ouch!

On a budget, we decided to look around and see if we could save a few bucks. To our surprise, we found a complete set of CVD’s for the T-Maxx from XTM at the great price of only $60! Sweet! The idea of saving $40 and setting up our T-Maxx with a full set of CVD’s sounded great to us.

They arrived and looked great. All the necessary pieces were supplied and installation is very straightforward. After everything was installed, we noticed that our wheels did not bolt up tight? We had to add shims to get the wheels to get them to fit snuggly. The shafts must have been a little long where the wheels slid on or perhaps the hole for the axle nut pin was slightly off? Not a huge deal really…..we can live with that for the money we saved on the shafts. We’ll just have to carry a few extra shims as they can fly off when the wheels are removed and we forget they are there.

Alright then! Time for some bashing. We burned slightly less than a half tank of fuel through the truck and everything seemed to be going well until….

I had the truck on my stand on my bench and was casually spinning the wheels, checking to be sure everything was spinning smoothly. Suddenly Pat (BYT contributor and bashing buddy) said “hey…spin those wheels again!” So I did and he said “Your rear CVD is bent!” WHAT?!?!?! Sure enough, it was bent. Unfortunately the truck had not experienced any major crashes or the like. We had been doing some average bashing here and there, some on the road way and some around the yard. NO major jumps and no crashes. Bad deal! Suddenly the delight of our $40 savings was gone and we realized that the old saying, ”you get what you pay for” is very true.

Maybe our experience was a fluke and this normally does not happen? Maybe not? Our recommendation, save yourself $60 and put it towards a set of MIP CVD’s.
