More specifically, hydroplane. I want to build a truck that is capable of tearing along the surface of a lake and make it to the other side using nothing more than the power of the tires scraping along the surface of the water. But after that I'm kind of stuck. Here's what I know I want:
1. 4WD 2. Indy suspension all around 3. The ability to not only drive on the water, but turn 4. Electric After that, it's really up in the air. Should I go big or small? Will weight or power be more of an issue? Do I need to run paddle tires or should I go for something more slick? Any help is as always greatly appretiated.

well you know jumbo kongs will float in the water right? Anyways, you will have to have a 4wd truck to do this, and it will not be able to go across a lake, a small stream yes, but will not be able to drive over a lake. You will need a motor to get your wheels spinning at an incredible rate, probably a MM and a lower KV motor and gear the thing really tall so that you can get the wheels spinning at a fast rate. I know the 1:1 trucks they build to do this use paddle tires, so I would maybe start there. Build the thing as light as possible, carbon fiber chassis, etc. These are just my $.02

I'm not looking for something that floats in the water, I'm looking for hydroplaning. Hmm...Who would want to take part in a buildoff with a hydroplaning theme?

actually you could probably do this with a rustler vxl at 60 even a 2wd will do it I mean look it up and you will find motorcycles doing it and the new vxl's are waterproof out of the box slap some proline sandpaws on the rear stockers up front should do the trick I did it with a puddle in the road at about 50

True but I'm looking for 4WD because I can still use it for other things with a different set of tires. I was thinking about getting a VXL Revo but I guess my real question is should I get 1/8 or 1/16?

I dont think you will be able to hydroplane it for very far like these fullsize ones but give it a try.

How could it not go as far as those ones? I bet with an RC I could get a lighter scale weight, much higher wheel speed, overall better power/weight ratio than the fullsize and they seem to be able to go fairly long distances...

I mean, at most those trucks are going at about 40 mph. If I can get a truck 1/10 that size to go the same speed with some paddle tires, why couldn't I do just as well if not much better?

Take a look at this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwxmC...eature=related It's on the water at a constant velocity for FAR too long for all of that to just be the momentum from driving on the ground. What's keeping him going is his tires. That's what I want.

Yes But the tire's are MUCH bigger then rc.
I would say a revo, Either 1/16 or the Nitro revo converted to electric with the biggest possible tire's and softest shocks for the lowest CoG. I dont know anything about electric motor's but the biggest Highest rpm Motor would be the best bet. Any budget? I would say paddle's would be the best. Mabye lock it in 2nd gear since the electric motor's generate the highest torque at 0 Rpm?

Budget isn't really an issue.

I was thinking Revo too. I guess now the question is; Big or small?

Ummm I would say the 1/10 nitro.
Easier to put in a motor.. But the E-revo is Water proof.. Depends if you want to water proof or have a bigger revo..

I'd rather have it be waterproof. EDIT: Wait, if I want a low center of gravity and lightweight, why not go with a brushless buggy?

Cause buggy's are no cool. And the shock's dont lay down.
Revo's are cooler. And the chassis' bigger. (I think?) Easier to work on revo's with a guarunteed wide range of parts.

I don't need the lay down shocks, and if I took a buggy and put larger tires on it I would think it would be a lot more stable. Plus a buggy will cost less. And of course the weight savings.

Ok, so not exactly cheaper to begin with but it's stronger, faster and lighter than the Revo to begin with. all that's missing it the paddle tires. And, you know, the waterproofing... EDIT: Err...And radio apparently...Nevermind.

Actually...Would there be any reason why a nitro couldn't work for this?

water+engine=not good(tried it but with a savy,stock tires)=rusty(i mean real rust) steering+dead servos+****ed up engine+rusty axles.
electrics would be better cuz more torque=getting to speed faster therefore getting a better chance. so i say revo 10th scale,MMM,6s,puddles.
