    Angry vxl problems

Hi, been a while! Sorry if wrong section, but I'm having serious problems with my stock vxl drive train. Started off with heat cut off kicking in quite soon after starting, so regularly pausing to cool is a requirement, then yesterday a motor cable snapped a connector (the yellow on on motor side) and since sorting that out it'll jerk a load then heat cut off within 5 seconds, and all cables and esc are kicking out ALOT of heat, however if I turn off Lipo low voltage cut off off it'll drive, but only once moving and about third power.

Is my esc shot? Motor? Or battery?

Btw, 3s 45c 5000mah Lipo, no other batteries or cars to try out.

Sounds like it might be a short in the motor. The stuttering does happen with sensor less systems, but it sounds like yours is severe which indicates and issue that could be with the motor or ESC. Since the motor wires are getting so hot I think it sounds like a short in the motor. Likely the cut off is the LVC and not thermal shut off since it will drive without the LVC on.

Thanks for reply, so what would be the best way to go about fixing this? Upgrade motor? (since this car is 4-5 years old now)

If it is a short in the motor then replacing it would be the easiest thing to do.

While you have the motor out i would change all your bearings. it sounds like you have a huge friction problem. unless the truck rolls effortlessly without the motor in it i would replace the bearings in your drivetrain.

it honestly could be either , do you have an lhs near or another motor / speed control to test them individually?

I can't easily get to my lhs (due to working hours), having not been in for years not sure how much help they'd be. And unfortunately have no access to other esc or motors.

Any easier ways of diagnosing problems?
Anyone live near Gloucester able to help :-P

You may be able to test the ESC with a multimeter, but I am just guessing.. I think replacing the motor is a safe decision. Even if the ESC was the problem, 4-5 years will really wear on a motor. Perhaps you could get in touch with Traxxas and they could help.

What would I look for with a multimeter?
And the car has only actually been driven a handful of times since New, maybe 10-15 times.

I really am not sure about the multimeter, but I imagine you would look for resistance in the motor and voltage coming out of the ESC.

you can test a brushless motor easily enough set your multimeter to ohms (I believe,,,) hook it up to any two wires and that will give you the resistance of that section of the motor, repeat until you have done all three pairs and if you have any reading that is higher or lower than the other two chances are your motor is pooched.
